A woven rattan pipe case of musozutsu

A woven rattan pipe case of musozutsu form decorated with a lacquered square cartouche containing a portrait image of Ishikawa Danjuro in his celebrated role Kamakura Gongoro- Kagemasa in the kabuki drama Shibaraku.

The notable role is readily recognised from the actor’s bold white and red makeup and the wide sleeves of his costume that are adorned with his crest. The hilt of a sword is visible beneath the cartouche. It is a role played by successive generations of Ishikawa Danjuro. Although details of the story change, the role is always one of the all-conquering hero saving someone from evil.
