Matsuda Sukenaga (1800-1871)

Hida. 19th century

A plump frog is poised on the shell of a walnut that is open to reveal a pale juicy kernel. The heavy irregular ridges of the shell contrast with its smooth interior, while the frog’s skin is carefully stippled. The amphibian’s eyes, inlaid in horn, are placidly watchful.
