Unsigned - hare netsuke

circa 1860

A plump short-eared hare sits contentedly while its offspring playfully clambers up its side. The hairwork is finely incised and the eyes are inlaid with dark horn beads.

Often referred to as rabbits by Westerners, in fact only the hare is native to Japan. It is much smaller and its ears are short in comparison to the European hare.
