19th century

A kinma lacquer manju of domed round shape. A technique originating in northern Thailand, Burma and Laos, it was introduced to Japan from China. It involves carving the design onto a black lacquered base and filling it in with cinnabar red. The densely intricate pattern is of ho-o birds against a scrolling wave ground, the reverse with diverse motifs.
