Suzuki Yoshihiko (1884-1969)

Tokyo. 1925

A kagamibuta with a design of the moon rising behind thick clouds illuminating windswept grasses below. The subtle scene conveys the feeling of the chills of autumn and a sense of beauty in desolation. Set within a stag antler bowl.

With tomobako inscribed by the artist Suzuki Yoshihiko 鈴木美彦 (1884-1969): The top of the lid: 秋之夜、鏡蓋 “Aki no yoru, kagamibuta” [The autumn night, kagamibuta].

The back of the lid: 大正乙丑夏、東公子、美彦 with the seal 美彦 “Taisho kinoto-ushi natsu, Tokoshi, Yoshihiko” [Made by Yoshuhiko, the art name Tokoshi, in the summer of Taisho 14 (1925)], with the seal Yoshihiko.

Born into a family of metal workers, Yoshihiko first studied under Unno Yoshimori II (1864-1919) subsequently becoming a pupil of Unno Shomin (1844-1915). He graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1903, after which he started signing his name with the same kanji character as that of Unno Yoshimori II, as a homage to his master.
