Unsigned cockerel netsuke
circa 1860
A cockerel stretches it wing out to preen the feathers as it sits on an upturned war drum. The plumage is finely and minutely carved, the wattle and cockscomb enhanced with red pigment. The underside of the drum bears the design of a mitsutomoe, a symbol associated with Raiden, the god of thunder. A rooster on a redundant war drum symbolizes peace and this scene of bucolic contentment reinforces that sense of tranquility.
