19th century

A pair of plump polychrome Hirado-ware puppies locked in a tight ball as they play fight. The uppermost pup’s coat is dappled brown, while his companion’s coat is blotched with black. Each has its sharp teeth firmly fixed into one of its adversary’s limbs. The struggle appears fairly evenly matched, though the black dog appears slightly more robust. Their short tails form tight curls, whilst the floppy ears and bright expressions enhance the humorous appeal of this piece. The porcelain is carefully incised to highlight their furry coats.
