Hidari Issan (1804-1857)
Iwashiro, circa 1840
Shoki, one of the Three Generals of Han, sits on a low wooden stool, his head bowed in concentration as he studies a scroll. One sleeve is pulled back over his shoulder revealing a pauldron and his soft robes are hitched up at one knee to show feather-edged leg armour. Closer inspection reveals that the stool is set on a tiger skin and his left foot is resting on the unfortunate animal’s head.
