Ouchi Sosui (1911-1972)
Tokyo, circa 1950
A stylised wood buffalo carved in the form of an ancient Chinese bronze of the Western Zhou dynasty (1046-771BC). The creature’s head is stretched forward and to the right, its mouth open in a bellow, and eyes fiercely focused. The coat markings are striped with whorls on the haunches and shoulders, the whole appearance echoing the roughened surface of bronze.
For an example of a Chinese bronze of this design see Alain Truong’s website: http://www.alaintruong.com/archives/2017/09/14/35675877.html
