Shugasai Toyokazu

Tanba, Early-mid 19th century

A pair of shishi cubs locked in tight combat form a futatsudomo-e shaped ball, the dominant animal sinking is teeth into his rival’s haunch. Though at a slight disadvantage, the second cub aims a bite at its opponent’s rear paw. It seems that all is still to play for in this action-filled grouping. The sense of dynamism is enhanced by the bobbled musculature and sharp claws. The incisor teeth of each are stained red and the eye are inlaid in pale horn.
