Shozan - carved kurumi of a Daruma

circa 1840

A cleverly carved kurumi (walnut), the natural ovoid shape forming an image of a Daruma wrapped in his kesa (simple Buddhist robe) that is held bunched up under his chin. The startled expression of the face is enhanced with the drilled eye pupils that are banded in metal.
