Ouchi Sosui (1911-1972)
Tokyo, circa 1950
A drunken ronin (masterless samurai) clasps his hand to his head and looks down in stupefied alarm as he trips on a recumbent pup. The dog yelps in fright at the rude intrusion on his slumber. The man is holding a flask of sake and an octopus tentacle tied by with a string, his forefinger looped though the knot. His kimono sags loosely open at his chest and the hem is tucked up into his obi (sash). His demeanour suggests he is much the worse for wear, his eyes open but unfocused in his alcohol-befuddled state.
