Wood netsuke signed Miwa
A pleasingly worn wood netsuke of a boy pulling one eye down in a game of bekkako. Seated on the ground, his right hand is clenched into a fist behind his back while his left hand pulls down his eyelid is a teasing gesture, as he invites a companion to guess what he is hiding in his hand. The eyes are inlaid in mica with black pupils. In a manner typical of Miwa work, the eyes have been inserted from the inside and the hollowed crown filled with a separately carved top-knot.
