Unsigned Baku

Unsigned Baku netsuke from Rosemary Bandini

A marine ivory netsuke of a baku, the mythical beast who is believed to devour bad dreams. The felicitous creature’s body twists into a spiral, its powerful limbs gathered close to its body and the knobbly spine curving to the side of its luxuriant tail and beard, while its proboscis twirls tightly upwards. The artist has exploited the restrictions of the shape of the tooth to create a compact and powerful netsuke. The animal’s fierce expression is enhanced by the dark buffalo horn inlaid eyes.
