Okatomo - Wolf netsuke

Kyoto, circa 1780

An emaciated wolf rests his
paw on a large clam, hungry contemplation of sustenance interrupted with a surprised
yelp of pain as a hamaguri
shell attaches itself to his right haunch. The canine’s ears are pulled back and the eyes startled with dismay. The bony ribs are clearly defined but the paws and muscular limbs are still powerful. The warm reddish brown wood is enhanced with hairwork. The eyes double inlaid in ivory with dark horn pupils.
