Hidari Issan (1804-1857)
Iwashiro, circa 1840
A fine wood netsuke depicting a turtle and young. The parent moves its legs in a walking movement, while its offspring hitches a ride on its back. The eyes are inlaid in dark horn ringed in brass.
Hidari Issan made several turtle subject netsuke. This example shows his remarkable skill. A carver who can achieve such a minutely detailed depiction must have spent a considerable time studying real turtles in order to understand its movements as well as its physical appearance.
