Hidari Issan (1804-1857)
Iwashiro, circa 1840
Seated on its haunches, a dark cherry wood tiger leans down to lick the face of its cub while swivelling its watchful eyes to the left. The creature’s body leans to one side, the muscular haunches and powerful shoulders creating an elegant movement. The adult’s eyes are double inlaid in bone and dark horn, while the cub’s are in horn.
