Unsigned

Kyoto, circa 1780

Two mokugyo carved as a large and small soft pouch, each secured by a cord to which is attached a bell and a head of Okame as an Usofuki mask. Each of the temple bells contain a loose ball, their design with shunga overtones, a suggestion reinforced by Okame’s sideways whistle.

Width: 4.2cm

Although unsigned, the apparently simple design is carved with great skill. Comparison with a signed example in wood suggests the hand of a master like Masanao or Hoshin.
