Ippo - lacquer (tsuishu) pipecase
Late 19th century
A carved red lacquer (tsuishu) pipecase of musozutsu form with a design of Shoki grasping a protesting oni by his neck. Shoki’s beard and hair are swept back and his robes flutter about him, creating an impression of his mighty power. Surrounded by pine trees and other foliage, another indignant oni is crushed under the demon-queller’s foot, while a third struggles to escape on the reverse side of the composition.
