Isshu - woven rattan pipecase
Late 19th century
A woven rattan pipecase of musozutsu form decorated in mother-of-pearl with a spray of nadeshiko (fringed pinks) apparently growing from a watery bed, as indicated by three concentric swirls of lacquer. Nadeshiko is associated with feminity and beauty.
Signed on an inlaid rectangular lacquer reserve: 一秋 (Isshu)
