Matsuda Sukenaga (1810-1871) - Frog netsuke
Hida Takayama, circa 1860
A frog squats poised and alert on the upturned half of a walnut shell. The mottled skin is stippled and stained dark while the eye pupils are inlaid in dark horn. The heavily dimpled surface of the nut’s shell bears the trailing remnants of the rotting husk which are also stained dark, the inner side is smooth.
