Kajikawa - Somada-style five-case inro

circa 1880

A Somada-style five-case inro of a monkey-trainer (sarumawashi), resting himself against the trunk of a weeping willow while his monkey dances, a sprig of willow balanced on its shoulder. The entertainer wears a Korean-style hat and patterned jacket, the head of a hobby horse poking out behind him, no doubt a prop for the simian’s performance.
