Hokei - tsuishu figure
Tokyo, circa 1900
A tsuishu (carved red lacquer) figure of a performer in the role of Minamoto Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura bakufu shogunate. The wave pattern on his wide trousers and fan with rising sun motif seem to allude to the famous scene of him releasing one thousand cranes on Yuigahama Beach. He holds an open fan in his right hand and a sword hangs from his waist.
