Tokyo, circa 1780

A wood netsuke of the Chinese general Kan’u (Ch. Guan Yu) in a formal standing pose, he clutches his long beard in one hand and the knot of his sash in the other. His hair is tied into a soft knotted scarf and his robes ripple gently in the breeze, lending him a powerful sense of ‘other-worldliness’. The large himotoshi is deeply excavated in the manner associated with early Edo (Tokyo) carvers. The feet are restored.

Height: 11.2cm
